Residents of Bihari colony in the capital’s Pallabi area blocked Kalshi intersection on Monday evening, demanding a permanent solution to persistent waterlogging in the locality.
The blockade, which began around 6:30pm on Monday, involved more than a thousand protesters. The demonstration caused significant disruption to traffic, leaving commuters facing severe congestion on busy thoroughfares.
Police sources said rainwater has been accumulating at the entrance of Kalshi Flyover, near Pallabi Police Station, leading to long-term waterlogging. Locals took to the streets to demand an immediate and permanent fix to the drainage crisis.
Personnel from the traffic and crime divisions of Mirpur are currently on-site to manage the situation and mitigate public suffering. They are working under the direction of the deputy commissioner (DC) of Mirpur Traffic Division to restore the flow of vehicles.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Paritran Talukder of Mirpur Traffic Division, confirmed the incident, saying the blockade began at approximately 6:30pm. “The protesters’ primary demand is the removal of stagnant water. Our officers are working to move them from the road and normalise traffic,” he added.
Meanwhile, vehicles are moving slowly through the affected area. Traffic police have advised drivers to avoid Kalshi route and use alternative roads where possible to bypass the disruption.
