The Election Commission (EC) has declared as valid the nomination papers of 12 out of 13 candidates nominated by the Jamaat alliance, for the reserved women’s seats in the 13th National Parliament.
However, the hearing for Monira Sharmin, a candidate from the National Citizen Party (NCP), has been kept pending until 12pm Thursday.
Md Moin Uddin Khan, the returning officer for reserved women’s seats, made the announcement on Tuesday at the Election Building in Agargaon following the completion of the scrutiny of nomination papers.
The candidates declared valid are Nurunnessa Siddiqua, Marzia Begum, Sabikunnahar Munni, Najmun Nahar Nilu, Mahfuza Hannan, Sajeda Samad, Shamsunnahar Begum, Mardia Momtaz, Rokeya Begum, Mahmuda Alam Mitu, and Tasmia Pradhan.
In contrast, a final decision regarding Monira Sharmin’s nomination remains outstanding. It was revealed during the hearing that she was previously a government employee and had received salary and allowances. She resigned from her post late last year.
Under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), 1972, a government official is not eligible to contest elections until three years have passed following their retirement or resignation. Her candidacy is currently being verified based on this legal requirement.
Consequently, the EC has deferred the decision on her nomination until 12pm Thursday, providing her with the opportunity to submit necessary documentation in her defence.
