Two-year-old child Sazid has died after falling into an abandoned deep tube well for 32 hours in Tanor Upazila, Rajshahi.
Fire Service Director (Operation and Maintenance) Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury briefed the media around 10pm on Thursday and provided this information.
He said, “We rescued the child after 32 hours of effort and quickly sent him to the hospital. We learned a short while ago that the child has been declared dead.”
Earlier, around 9pm that day, Fire Service’s rescue team lifted the child through a tunnel excavated beside the hole, rescued him in an unconscious state, and took him to the hospital for treatment.
Tanore Upazila Executive Officer Naime Khan confirmed that Sazid was rescued and sent to the hospital on Thursday night.
After nearly 32 hours, Fire Service rescued the unconscious two-year-old child who had fallen into a hole dug for a deep tube well.
Earlier, rescuers had dug 42 feet into an abandoned deep-well shaft in Rajshahi in a desperate search for two-year-old Sajid, who fell into the narrow borehole.
The incident occurred around noon on Wednesday in Koelhat Purbo Para village of Tanore upazila, when Sajid slipped into a narrow hole with an 8-foot radius that had been dug for a deep tube well.
Since then, firefighters and local volunteers were working tirelessly to reach him.
Locals have informed that last year, a local person attempted to install a deep tube well here. However, as water was not found even at 120 feet, the pipe was left abandoned with its opening exposed.
During last year’s rains, the opening of the hole became even larger. Locals allege that the accident occurred because there were no warning measures or cover.
Earlier in the evening, Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury had informed that the chances of child Sajid, who fell into the deep tube well hole, surviving were slim. However, whether alive or dead, the operation would continue until the child was rescued.
