The exhumation and repatriation of the remains of 18 Japanese soldiers killed during World War II have been completed at the Chattogram War Cemetery.

A 10-member specialist team, nominated by the Government of Japan, conducted the operation in Chattogram from 17 to 28 November, the ISPR said in a press release on Monday.

According to the press release, Bangladesh Army’s Chattogram zone provided security and administrative support for the operation under directives from the interim government.

The excavation was supervised and led by freedom fighter and excavation specialist Lt Col (Retd) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir, Bir Protik.

Upon completion of the exhumation on 28 November, the Bangladesh Army accorded a Guard of Honour to pay respects to the fallen soldiers. The remains were later sent to Japan.

Earlier in 2024, the remains of 23 Japanese soldiers who died in World War II were similarly exhumed and repatriated from the Mainamati War Cemetery in Cumilla at the request of the Japanese government.
