Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Real Betis on Friday in La Liga, with Hector Bellerin scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to cancel out Vinicius Junior’s opener, leaving Madrid eight points behind Barcelona with five games remaining. The result reduced Madrid’s margin for error in the title race.
Madrid created chances through direct attacking play and quick transitions into the final third. Vinicius operated off the left and attacked rebounds and second balls, which led to his goal. The team relied on vertical passes from midfield, particularly from Federico Valverde, to break Betis’ defensive structure.
Betis controlled phases of possession and pushed Madrid back with sustained pressure. They created repeated chances by attacking wide areas and delivering crosses into the box. A team builds control in this way by keeping the ball and forcing the opponent to defend deeper for longer periods.
Madrid’s defensive structure struggled under pressure and relied on Andriy Lunin to maintain the lead. He made several saves to deny clear chances. The back line failed to clear danger consistently, which allowed Betis to keep attacking.
Madrid missed chances to extend the lead, including an offside goal from Kylian Mbappe. These missed opportunities left the game open. Betis capitalised late when Bellerin reacted to a loose ball in the box and finished from close range.
“We suffered another blow in the final minutes, as has already happened to us many other times, and we end up with a result I don’t think we deserved, because we had chances,” said coach Alvaro Arbeloa. He pointed to repeated late concessions, which indicates a recurring defensive issue.
He also said refereeing decisions “heavily influenced the game”. He shifted part of the focus onto officiating, although Betis also had appeals, which weakens that claim.
“In these situations you have very little time to think,” said Bellerin. He described the instinctive nature of his finish in a crowded penalty area. “We had a lot of chances, during the game I had the feeling that we had a lot of control and we were getting opportunities and we didn’t have the luck of them going in — and then look, it happened to me.” He highlighted Betis’ consistent chance creation, which supports their late goal.
Barcelona can extend their lead to 11 points if they beat Getafe. Madrid now rely on dropped points elsewhere while managing their remaining fixtures, including a trip to Barcelona.
