The Detective Branch (DB) of police has released the father and elder brother of Siddhartha Das, a key suspect arrested in connection with the strangulation of four family members in Rangpur.
Binoy Das and his elder son, Partha Das, were permitted to leave DB office around 11:30pm on Saturday after signing written undertakings. They had been taken into custody for questioning earlier that afternoon.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sonaton Chakroborty confirmed that the two men had been brought in for questioning and were subsequently let go after providing written undertakings.
Following his release, Binoy informed reporters that detectives had questioned them on different aspects of the homicides, adding that they hared the same information with police that they had previously given to media.
The case involves the murders of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their 25-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, and their 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam.
Their bodies were discovered inside their locked home in Machhuapara, Rangpur city on 22 August. According to law enforcement, all four victims were strangled to death.
The day after the discovery, police arrested Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, from the same neighbourhood in connection with the crime.
The two detainees have since given confessional statements before a court under Code of Criminal Procedure. In addition, two witnesses, identified as Shimanto and Bidyut Das, have also recorded their statements before the court.
