Two suspects have provided confessional statements before a court regarding the stabbing and shooting death of college student Rakibul Hasan Rakib in the Central Shaheed Minar area. Two other suspects have been placed on a five-day remand for interrogation.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin recorded the statements and passed the remand order following an application by the investigating officer.
Sub-Inspector Md Mithu Sarkar of Shahbagh Police Station, the investigating officer (IO) of the case, confirmed that suspects Golam Rasul Shihab and Sagar Kabir gave voluntary confessional statements.
Meanwhile, the court granted a five-day remand for Rafin Sheikh and Shahriar Nazim Joy, against a seven-day prayer by the police.
According to the IO, Shihab was apprehended at the scene in the Shaheed Minar area, while Sagar was arrested in Patuakhali. Rafin and Joy were both detained in Khulna.
During preliminary interrogation, Shihab and Sagar admitted their direct involvement in the killing. They reportedly informed police that the attack was carried out under the instructions of Salauddin, a top terrorist based in Khulna.
The IO stated that the remand is necessary to uncover the primary motive behind the homicide, recover the pistol and local weapons used in the crime, and identify other accomplices.
Rakibul Hasan Rakib, 25, a second-year undergraduate student at Sheikh Borhanuddin College, was killed on Sunday night. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30pm when Rakib arrived at the Central Shaheed Minar on a motorcycle.
Witnesses said he was first shot and then repeatedly stabbed by five to six unidentified individuals who subsequently fled the scene. Pedestrians rescued the critically injured student and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where on-duty doctors pronounced him dead.
Following the incident, the victim’s father, Tarikul Islam Khokon – an employee of Dhaka University – filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station on Monday. Police have stated that drives are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects involved in the killing.
