A Dhaka court has sentenced Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to five years’ imprisonment in three cases over corruption in securing plots in Rajuk’s Purbachal New Town Project.
Joy was also fined Tk1 lakh.
The court also sentenced Hasina’s daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, to five years in jail in the same cases.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Md Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court 5 around noon.
Hasina, who was also found guilty of the charges, was sentenced to a total of 21 years’ imprisonment — seven years in each of the three cases. Each sentence will begin after the completion of the previous one.
Mohammad Khurshid Alam, a former member of Rajuk (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha), was produced before the court by the Anti-Corruption Commission in the morning.
He was sentenced to one year in jail.
Meanwhile, Saiful Islam Sarker, an administrative officer at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, was acquitted in all three cases.
“The plot was allotted to Hasina without any application and in a manner that exceeded the legally authorized jurisdiction,” the court observed.
The court began reading the judgment at 11:23am and concluded at 11:40am.
The ACC filed six separate cases in January over alleged irregularities in Purbachal plot allocations, naming Hasina, Joy, Putul, Sheikh Rehana, her daughter Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, son Radwan Mujib Siddiq, daughter Azmina Siddiq, and several others as defendants. Today’s verdict covers three of those six cases.
