The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has called on the private sector to take stronger measures in ensuring the stability of essential goods’ prices and supplies ahead of the upcoming Ramadan.

FBCCI Administrator Md Abdur Rahim Khan made the appeal during a meeting with traders and stakeholders held at the federation’s Motijheel office on Wednesday, according to a press release.

He urged all chambers, associations and business leaders to maintain an uninterrupted markt flow of essential items such as rice, sugar, edible oil, onion and dates.

“Market stability cannot be achieved by government efforts alone — it requires a collective approach involving the private sector and the media,” Rahim Khan said.

The session began with an overview of the current market situation presented by FBCCI Secretary General Md Alamgir.

During the meeting, traders highlighted that a smooth and continuous supply from mills is vital to prevent price volatility during the fasting month.

Mill owners, however, voiced concerns over possible production disruptions due to gas shortages in winter, despite favourable global sugar prices.

Participants also recommended reviewing import duties on selected commodities and suggested increased government involvement in edible oil imports to reinforce private sector initiatives.

Md Abdur Rahim Khan assured attendees that all proposals raised in the meeting would be compiled and forwarded to the relevant government authorities for necessary action.

The meeting was attended by former FBCCI directors, leaders of chambers and associations, representatives from market committees, and officials from the commerce ministry, National Board of Revenue, and Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission among others.
