Assistant teachers of government primary schools across the country have launched a full‑day work abstention to press home their three‑point demands.
Shamsuddin Masud, convener of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, told TIMES of Bangladesh that if the authorities fail to meet the demands, they will boycott the annual examinations and begin a hunger strike from 11 December.
The strike will continue until there is significant progress, including the upgrading of their job grades.
Meanwhile, the teachers’ leaders have instructed the protesters to upload photos of the strike to their Facebook groups.
Earlier, another association of assistant teachers, Shikkhak Songothon Oikya Parishad, called a strike from 25 to 27 November to press for a gazette notification upgrading their job grades.
As that call did not elicit a strong response, the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council revived the movement and announced a fresh programme.
There are 65,569 government primary schools in the country.
