President Mohammed Shahabuddin will inaugurate a nine-day “Jute and Multipurpose Jute Products Fair” from Friday to mark National Jute Day.
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam said the president will open the fair virtually from the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy premises, speaking at a briefing at his Secretariat office.
The fair is being organised by the Department of Jute and the Jute Diversification Promotion Centre.
It will run for nine days and showcase diversified jute products aimed at promoting the sector and expanding market opportunities.
The state minister invited buyers, entrepreneurs, businesspeople and other stakeholders to visit the fair.
He said seven closed jute mills are being reopened and the remaining mills will gradually be restarted under private management.
The government is also continuing long-term leasing of mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation to encourage private operation and create employment, he said.
Shariful Alam said around 7,200 workers are currently employed in nine leased mills, which will help boost production and generate jobs.
He added the government aims to transform Bangladesh into a modern, democratic upper-middle income country and build a $1 trillion economy by 2034 while prioritising employment generation.
