President Mohammed Shahabuddin paid homage to the heroic martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial on the Victory Day.
He placed the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial in Savar at 6:33am on Tuesday in the first light of the day.
After laying the wreath, the president stood in silence for a few moments to honour the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War.
A smartly turned‑out contingent of the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute, while a bugle played a mournful tune.
Advisers of the interim government, freedom fighters and their family members, diplomats, representatives of various development partner organisations, and civil and military officials were present at the time.
At 6:56am, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus also placed a wreath to pay tribute to the martyrs.
Around the same time, the Bangladesh Army honoured the Liberation War martyrs with a 31‑gun salute at the old Tejgaon Airport in the capital. A simultaneous 31‑gun salute was also carried out in Cox’s Bazar.
Beginning with the 1952 Language Movement, the Bangali nation’s struggle for rights continued over a long path and culminated in the 1971 Liberation War.
To commemorate that glorious victory, a series of national‑level programmes have been undertaken this year as in previous years to observe Victory Day with due dignity.
