Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday honoured the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar as the country marks the 55th Victory Day.
He placed the wreath at the memorial’s altar at 6:56am and stood in solemn silence to pay homage to those who laid down their lives in the 1971 Liberation War.
A contingent representing the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force offered a state salute during the ceremony.
Yunus later wrote in the visitors’ book. The chief justice, advisers to the interim government, heads of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats, and senior civil and military officials were also present.
The formal observance of the Victory Day began with a 31‑gun salute at the old Dhaka airport area in Tejgaon. An artillery regiment of the Bangladesh Army fired 31 rounds from six guns to honour the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Liberation War.
Across the country, Victory Day is being observed with extensive programmes to honour the martyrs whose sacrifices paved the way for Bangladesh’s independence.
On 16 December 1971, the nation emerged as a sovereign state at the cost of the lives of 30 lakh people and the violation endured by around two lakh women.
Alongside the government, political parties and various socio-political, educational and cultural bodies have organised a range of events to commemorate the day.
