The proposed Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system is an “imposed process” that the people of Bangladesh will not accept, says BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He made this remark while addressing a commemorative discussion on the second death anniversary of Democratic League (DL) General Secretary Saifuddin Ahmed Moni at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday.
“This new concept has been brought forward abruptly, and the people of this country have no idea about it. The PR system will not be accepted by the people,” he said, adding that anything imposed on the people would ultimately be rejected.
He alleged that some political parties were trying to delay the upcoming national election by advocating for the PR system.
“The intention behind pushing this system is to prolong the process of returning power to the people,” Fakhrul said.
Reiterating BNP’s stance, he said, “We want the implementation of the interim government’s commitment to hold the national election in February. The people want to see an election and return to a democratic system through it.”
Fakhrul reaffirmed BNP’s commitment to political reforms, referring to the party’s Vision 2030 and 31-point reform agenda announced in 2016.
He claimed that many of the reforms currently being discussed by the Reform Commission were originally proposed by BNP.
Fakhrul also said the “July Charter” would be signed on 17 October to finalise the agreed reform issues.
He expressed confidence that people would choose the right leadership to rebuild a self-reliant nation.
