Police have resumed checking public buses in a manner reminiscent of Awami regime. Officers are conducting searches of passengers’ mobile phones and bags at checkpoints established at all major entry points to the capital.
These searches are causing serious inconvenience to commuters.
In Savar, police have intensified checks along the Dhaka-Aricha and Nabinagar-Chandra highways. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area. The bags and mobile phones of passengers are being searched on suspicion.
Additional SP Arafatul Islam stated that the additional deployment in Savar aims to prevent any disruption to public life and property. This is connected to the “Dhaka Lockdown” programme called by a banned political party.
He confirmed that search checkpoints and patrols have been increased. Police personnel are performing their duties in plain clothes. Checkpoints have been set up at more than ten locations.
Mohammad Jewel Mia, the officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said, “By checking mobiles and bags, we are trying to see if they are carrying any materials for sabotage.”
