Police have apprehended possible clashes with political party activists, particularly from the NCP and anti-discrimination student groups, across the country on the founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities are banned.
There are also concerns that police may come under attack if they attempt to obstruct Awami League activities, prompting authorities to issue precautionary directives to all police units nationwide.
A letter signed on Thursday by DIG (Confidential) Md Kamrul Ahsan of Police Headquarters instructed all units to take necessary security measures.
Police Superintendents of two metropolitan and three district police units have confirmed receiving the directive.
The letter stated that on the occasion of Awami League’s founding anniversary on 23 June, party activists may hoist flags at party offices in various districts and hold open processions with banners. This could lead to clashes, and they may become hostile towards police if obstructed.
Multiple officials at Police Headquarters confirmed the authenticity of the letter to TIMES of Bangladesh, saying the message was sent nationwide as part of advance warning based on reports from several intelligence agencies.
Police have begun preparing preventive security measures, and intelligence operations have been intensified, officials said.
The development comes as the Awami League remains banned following the change in government, raising concerns over any public display of party activities. Police have urged all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
