Police recovered the body of a sub-inspector from Paikandi village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Monday morning.
The deceased, BM Mahmudul Islam Nobel, was posted at the Mahalchhari Armed Police Battalion in Khagrachhari.
Police said Mahmudul came to Gopalganj on official duty on Friday and later went to his in-laws’ house.
Local children spotted his body near a pond beside the house of his father-in-law, Jhunu Sheikh, in Paikandi Purba Para village at around 9:30am on Monday.
His wife, Kaniz Fatema, and members of her family later recovered the body and placed it on a van beside the road.
On receiving information, police went to the scene and sent the body to the morgue of Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital for an autopsy.
Family members and locals said Mahmudul had usually stayed at his in-laws’ house during holidays instead of visiting his own village, Bijoypasha, since his marriage around 10 years ago.
Relatives alleged that the couple had been involved in a long-running family dispute over an alleged extramarital relationship involving his wife. They also claimed that pressure from his wife had prevented him from visiting his own family home.
Police took Kaniz Fatema and Jhunu Sheikh into custody for questioning to determine the cause of Mahmudul’s death.
