Thirty rounds of police ammunition and other equipment were stolen early Tuesday morning from on-duty police personnel stationed at the Sri Sri Mahadev Ashram and Kali Temple in Nimtoli, Badda, prompting swift disciplinary action from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Following the incident, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Badda Police Station, Md Saiful Islam was withdrawn, while seven police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector (SI), an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), and five constables, were temporarily suspended over alleged negligence of duty.
The stolen ammunition was later recovered, and three individuals are currently being interrogated in connection with the theft, police said.
Confirming the development, Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Gulshan Division, Md Tarek Mahmud, said the action was taken due to negligence of duty. “The OC has been withdrawn and disciplinary measures taken against the others,” he said.
According to DMP sources, the police personnel were assigned to security duty at the temple during the ongoing religious festivities. Their accommodation had been arranged on the second floor of an under-construction building within the temple compound.
Between 4:30am and 5:30am, while four police personnel and three Ansar members were asleep, four bags, two wallets, and three mobile phones were stolen from their room. One of the bags contained 30 rounds of shotgun ammunition.
Later that morning, around 9:45am, the missing items were recovered in an abandoned plot adjacent to the temple premises. The ammunition was found intact.
The DMP official has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and the three detained individuals are being questioned for possible involvement.
