Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit the family of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in the Pallabi area of Dhaka tonight following the Cabinet meeting.
According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, he is expected to leave for Ramisa’s residence at around 9pm to console her bereaved family.
Ramisa, a Class-II student, was raped and murdered allegedly by a tenant living in a neighbouring flat on Tuesday. Police said the suspect, Sohel Rana, reportedly lured the child into his room after she left her flat in the morning and then allegedly committed the crime.
Her decapitated body was later discovered under a bed, while her severed head was recovered from a bucket in the bathroom. Locals detained the suspect’s wife, Swapna Akter, as Sohel Rana escaped by cutting through a window grille, police added. He was subsequently arrested in Fatullah, Narayanganj, on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, the accused reportedly gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka court.
Earlier on Thursday, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed assured that exemplary punishment would be ensured in the shortest possible time in the case.
