Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher has said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will maintain a special focus on the overall development of Cumilla to ensure sustained regional progress.
He made the remarks while addressing a civic rally on development planning and implementation held at Cumilla Town Hall field on Saturday.
Highlighting various government initiatives, the minister said the Cumilla Development Authority was established soon after the BNP came to power to streamline planned urban expansion in the city.
He also said a proposal for the Dhaka–Cumilla rail corridor has been approved, which will establish a direct rail link between the capital and Cumilla.
“Development in Cumilla always accelerates when the BNP is in power,” he said. “We are working to provide facilities that go beyond the standard amenities of a divisional city.”
The minister further said plans are underway to establish a new 500 to 1,000-bed hospital in the city. He added that he had discussed these priorities with the Prime Minister, who assured him that the momentum of Cumilla’s development would be sustained.
Cumilla-6 (Sadar) MP Monirul Huq Chowdhury presented a detailed outline of ongoing development projects and their implementation progress at the programme.
The rally was presided over by Amiruzzaman Amir, senior vice president of Cumilla South District BNP.
Other speakers included Cumilla Development Authority Chairman Udbatul Bari Abu, Zila Parishad Administrator Mostaq Mia, District Judge’s Court Public Prosecutor Advocate Kaimul Huq Rinku, Cumilla South District BNP General Secretary Ashikur Rahman Mahmud Wasim, and Organising Secretary Nazrul Haque Bhuiyan Swapan, among others.
