Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed relevant authorities to take immediate action to support farmers affected by heavy rainfall in the Haor region. He emphasised the necessity of preparing a transparent list of the affected farmers to ensure they receive the required assistance.
The prime minister issued these directives during a meeting held on Thursday afternoon at his office in the Cabinet Division of the Bangladesh Secretariat. The session was organised to review the ongoing financial assistance programme for farmers in the haor areas.
During the meeting Tarique stated that an accurate and transparent list must be prepared to identify those who have genuinely suffered losses. He confirmed that financial aid would be provided to these farmers for the next three months based on this list.
The meeting further decided that financial assistance would be delivered to the affected farmers swiftly. Additionally, discussions were held regarding the possibility of advancing the paddy planting and harvesting season to protect farmers from future crop damage caused by early rains.
This follows an announcement made by Tarique in Parliament on 29 April, where he stated that the government would endeavour to provide three months of support to farmers identified as victims of heavy rainfall in the Haor region.
The meeting was attended by the Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, and Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Amin ur Rashid Yasin.
Prominent parliamentary members from the haor region also attended the event, including Deputy Speaker of Parliament Barrister Kayser Kamal, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam, Dr Osman Faruk, Fazlur Rahman, Lutfuzzaman Babar, Kamruzzaman Kamrul, Nurul Islam, Kolim Uddin Milon, and Mohammad Koysor Ahmad.
