Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday began distributing clothes and food items among poor and destitute people as part of programmes marking the 45th death anniversary of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman.
The distribution programme started around 11:30am at the premises of Rajdhani High School on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.
The event marked the beginning of day-long initiatives that include distribution of clothing, essential goods and free healthcare services for underprivileged people on the occasion of Ziaur Rahman’s death anniversary.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Safiqul Islam Khan and former councillor Anwaruzzaman were among those present.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend similar programmes at 16 more locations across Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) throughout the day.
Earlier in the day, he paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman on the 45th death anniversary.
He first placed a wreath at Ziaur Rahman’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in his capacity as Prime Minister. He later placed another wreath as BNP Chairman, accompanied by members of the party’s Standing Committee, including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and Prof AZM Zahid Hossain.
BNP and its associate bodies are observing the 45th death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman with various programmes across the country.
Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1978 and was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981, while serving as President. BNP observes the day as Zia’s “Shahadat Barshiki.”
