Yawer Sayeed, regarded as the architect of Bangladesh’s modern mutual fund industry, died in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, before dawn on Saturday at 67 while undergoing treatment for lung cancer.
AIMS of Bangladesh, the asset management firm he founded in 1999, called his death an “irreparable loss” to the institution and capital market community.
Sayeed pioneered Bangladesh’s private mutual fund industry when long-term savings were dominated by bank deposits and state-linked instruments. Through AIMS of Bangladesh, he launched the country’s first private mutual fund, creating an early market-based investment channel outside banking.
His initiatives helped establish mutual funds as a mainstream asset class, widening retail participation and formalising asset management practices in Bangladesh’s financial system.
Across nearly four decades in banking, insurance and investment, Sayeed remained active in capital market development beyond fund management. He served on committees under the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, contributing to early regulatory design.
He also worked as a consultant and performance auditor for the Asian Development Bank and coordinated finance, industry and trade consultative groups in Bangladesh, with advisory roles including the World Bank.
Beyond institutional roles, Sayeed was a prominent commentator on corporate governance and capital market reform, contributing to national and international media on economic policy and market structure.
Educated in international relations, public administration and economics, he completed his bachelor’s degree with honours and an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration at the University of Dhaka.
He later pursued postgraduate study in applied finance and investment at the Securities Institute of Australia, becoming an associate and incorporating the Australian Society of Security Analysts.
Capital market figures expressed condolences, calling him a long-standing influence on Bangladesh’s investment ecosystem.
The date, time and venue of his namaz-e-janaza will be announced after repatriation of the body to Bangladesh.
