Doctors have successfully edited a gene in humans that can permanently reduce the cholesterol levels in blood. It is a potential one-time treatment that may eliminate the need for lifelong medication.

This experimental therapy targets a specific gene called PCSK9, which plays a key role in regulating cholesterol levels in the blood. By using advanced CRISPR gene-editing technology, scientists were able to ‘turn-off’ this gene, leading to a significant and lasting drop-in Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. This is also often referred to as the ‘bad’ cholesterol because it blocks arteries and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Early trials have shown promising results, with participants experiencing a sharp decrease in cholesterol levels within weeks of receiving the treatment. Experts believe this innovation could become a game-changer in cardiovascular medicine, particularly for people with genetic conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia, who often struggle to control their cholesterol through diet or drugs alone.

While more long-term studies are underway to ensure safety and effectiveness, researchers are optimistic that this approach could one day replace daily statins and injections. If proven safe, gene-editing therapies like this could mark the beginning of a whole new, pill-free medical era.
