BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that people do not understand the concept of a referendum or the July Charter, and therefore the referendum must be held on the day of the national election.
He made the remarks on Sunday at a views-exchange meeting organised by the Jagannathpur Union unit of BNP at Daulatpur Girls’ High School in Thakurgaon.
The BNP agrees to almost all reforms, and those it does not agree with will be discussed in Parliament, he said.
He also described the controversy surrounding reforms and the referendum as a “staged drama”.
The BNP leader said that only a few educated people understand reforms, while ordinary citizens simply want to vote. “But this government does not represent the people, so it cannot understand their suffering,” he said.
Declaring that the upcoming election will be his last, Mirza Fakhrul urged voters to cast their ballots for the BNP’s symbol — the sheaf of paddy.
Thakurgaon District BNP General Secretary Paigam Ali, Finance Secretary Shariful Islam, and Sadar President Abdul Hamid were present, among others.
