NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary has called on the government to expedite efforts to combat sexual assault on women, ensure justice, and implement much-needed reforms.
He stressed that the Ministry of Home Affairs must prioritise ensuring women’s safety as its most urgent responsibility.
Patwary made the remarks at an Iftar gathering hosted by the Dhaka Division NCP in Uttara on Friday evening.
He revealed that families of martyrs have been coming forward, asking when justice will be served for their loved ones.
“The families of martyrs are asking us when justice will be delivered. We need to send a clear message to the government,” Patwary said.
In his speech, he also emphasised, “It’s heartening to see many martyr families here with us today. They’ve asked us when justice will be served, and we need to address that question clearly.”
Patwary directly appealed to the home minister, stating, “The primary responsibility of the home minister is to end sexual assault on women in Bangladesh.”
Addressing the issue of women’s safety, he expressed deep concern, “Our women are living in fear. If we do not improve the law and order situation and guarantee their safety, it will be extremely concerning.”
Patwary further urged the government to take immediate action, stating that swift action is needed to stop sexual assault, while emphasising that criminals have no political affiliation, despite party-affiliated thugs being involved in such activities.
He also criticised the opposition, especially the BNP, for opposing reforms, urging them to swiftly form the Reform Assembly to advance the process.
Patwary warned that failing to address the situation would lead to a return to the past, where the martyrs and the injured had the mandate following the mass uprising.
He also expressed concern about the worsening law and order situation, stating that “Rape and murders are occurring in various places, creating a dangerous contradiction.”
Patwary concluded by reaffirming his party’s position, stating, “We demand an end to sexual assault in Bangladesh, swift justice, and the formation of the Reform Assembly. We will not compromise on issues of rights, reforms, justice, and public safety.”
