A Palestinian journalist, Saleh Aljafarawi, tragically lost his life during clashes in Gaza City, mere days after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in the region.
The 28-year-old, known for his videos documenting the conflict, was fatally shot by members of an “armed militia” while covering ongoing violence in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood.
Al Jazeera Arabic reported that Aljafarawi had been missing since Sunday morning, and his body, wearing a “press” flak jacket, was discovered on the back of a truck, as captured in verified footage from reporters and activists.
Palestinian sources confirmed he was caught in clashes between Hamas security forces and fighters from the Doghmush clan, though local authorities have not officially confirmed the details of the conflict.
A senior source in Gaza’s Ministry of Interior stated that the violence involved a militia allegedly linked to the Israeli occupation. The source revealed that the militia had been involved in killing displaced people as they returned to Gaza City, despite the recent ceasefire.
Throughout his career, Aljafarawi had faced numerous threats from Israel due to his journalistic work. Speaking to Al Jazeera earlier this year, he reflected on the challenges and constant fear he experienced, especially after receiving threats from Israeli authorities. “I lived in fear for every second,” he said, recalling the torment of being displaced from northern Gaza during the war.
Aljafarawi’s death marks a grim milestone in the deadliest conflict for journalists, with over 270 media workers killed in Gaza since October 2023. His passing comes as the current ceasefire holds for a third consecutive day, ahead of a planned prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas.
As international leaders, including US President Donald Trump, gather in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh for a summit aimed at securing peace and stability in the Middle East, the situation in Gaza remains fragile, with growing concerns over the safety of journalists and civilians alike.
