The service areas of Padma Bridge are set to generate a total of 6,033 kilowatt-peak (kWp) of electricity through solar power.

This week, the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) signed an agreement with a private company to implement the project within six months.

The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) recently conducted a feasibility study on solar power generation at the bridge.

According to the survey, Service Area-1 can produce 1,966 kWp, Service Area-2 about 2,948 kWp, and Service Area-3 around 1,119 kWp, amounting to a total potential of 6,033 kWp.

To harness this potential, the BBA, following the directive of Adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, signed a Tk 23.58 crore agreement with Omera Renewable Energy Limited.

The agreement was signed by Chief Engineer of BBA Kazi Md Ferdous and CEO of Omera Renewable Energy Limited Masudur Rahman.

Under the deal, the solar systems are expected to be installed within six months, with completion targeted by March 14, 2026.

As part of the Renewable Energy Policy 2025, the government aims to meet 20 percent of total power demand from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040.

In line with this goal, the Power Division has launched the ‘National Rooftop Solar Programme’ to prioritise renewable energy and strengthen energy security.

The BBA also noted that electricity billing will be managed through the net metering system, which will help reduce overall costs.
