At least 50 people, including women, were injured in a violent clash between two groups over the accounting of mosque funds and a dispute for dominance in Baniyachong upazila of Habiganj.
According to police and local sources, a long-standing dispute existed between the supporters of former UP member Siraj Uddin and Taitul Mia of Kaora Kandi village regarding the financial records of the local mosque.
This conflict had previously led to a clash on February 20, resulting in the police arresting two individuals. The tension resurfaced on Thursday after one of the detainees returned to the area upon being released on bail.
The situation escalated after evening when both sides, armed with local weapons, engaged in a face-to-face confrontation. The prolonged clash left over 50 people injured.
Upon receiving information, police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The injured were rescued and admitted to Habiganj Modern Sadar Hospital and various private clinics for treatment.
The injured individuals have been identified as Arju Mia (60), Shamsul Haque (40), Mohibur Mia (25), Arman (45), Fazal Haque (60), Khelu Mia (35), Nurul Haque (60), Akkas Mia (40), Chabu Mia (30), Humayun (18), Forash Mia (25), Abdur Rauf (35), Touhidul (20), Shipon (30), Rup Mia (30), Abdul Malek Mia (55), Ruhul Amin (32), Jasmine (21), Tanvir (25), Shamsul (35), and Nazmul Mia.
Sharif Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baniyachong Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that the clash broke out over mosque accounts. He added that the situation is currently calm.
