After nearly 38 hours, the intern doctors at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital have ended their strike.
On Sunday afternoon, intern doctors held a meeting with hospital authorities, who assured them that their demands would be met. Following the assurance, Ansar personnel were deployed across all wards of the hospital.
The protesting intern doctors announced they would resume work from Monday morning after their eight-point demands were accepted.
The strike had begun on Friday night after a scuffle between intern doctors and the relatives of a patient seeking treatment. In protest, the interns halted their duties, leaving thousands of patients facing severe disruptions in hospital services.
On Saturday, the interns continued their strike after prolonged talks with hospital authorities failed to reach an immediate resolution. During this time, they formally presented their eight-point list of demands to the administration.
On Sunday afternoon, the hospital’s director, Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir, and senior officials held extended discussions with the intern doctors. They assured that Ansar personnel would be deployed across critical hospital areas to ensure security. Following this, the interns agreed to resume work.
Speaking after the decision, intern doctor Mohammad Sadik said, “We began the strike to secure safety at our workplace. The authorities have assured us that our demands will be fulfilled, so we are calling off the strike. Considering mental preparedness, we will return to duty from 8am on Monday.”
Brigadier General Umar Rashed Munir said, “The interns have agreed to resume work after our assurances. We will prioritise their safety and have already deployed Ansar personnel in sensitive hospital areas to maintain security.”
