The body of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, will be laid to rest beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Dhaka University, the university administration confirmed on Friday night.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told the media around midnight said the university syndicate held an urgent online meeting at 10:30pm to consider the family’s request for the burial.
“The decision was made in line with the family’s wishes, letters from the Cabinet Division, and the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union,” he added.
The administration was informed of an available spot in the mausoleum for the burial.
Security arrangements for the burial were also discussed during the syndicate meeting to ensure a safe and orderly ceremony.
Hadi was shot on 12 December while returning from election campaigning on Box Culvert Road, Bijoynagar, Dhaka. Witnesses said assailants fired at him from a moving motorcycle. He was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then transferred to Evercare Hospital, and later airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care. Hadi passed away on Thursday night while undergoing treatment.
His body was returned to Bangladesh on Friday evening and kept at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases mortuary before burial arrangements were finalised.
