A bus driver was killed and at least 20 passengers were injured after two buses collided head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bahubal upazila of Habiganj yesterday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:00am at Dubaoi Bazar area, in front of Akij Venture Company. The identity of the deceased driver could not be confirmed immediately.
Police and local sources said a Dhaka-bound Unique Paribahan bus collided head-on with a Sylhet-bound Lucky Paribahan bus. The force of the impact sent the Unique Paribahan bus off the road and into a roadside ditch, while the Lucky Paribahan bus was badly damaged.
The driver of the Unique Paribahan bus died at the scene. At least 20 people, including the driver of the Lucky Paribahan bus and passengers of both vehicles, suffered injuries.
Local residents, along with police and Fire Service personnel, carried out rescue operations and rushed the injured to Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and other nearby healthcare facilities.
The crash disrupted traffic on the busy highway for nearly an hour. Vehicle movement returned to normal after personnel from Shayestaganj Highway Police Station and Bahubal Fire Service recovered the body and removed the damaged vehicles from the road.
Shuvro Ranjan Chakma, officer-in-charge of Shayestaganj Highway Police Station, confirmed the incident.
“The driver of the Unique Paribahan bus was killed instantly in the head-on collision. We are trying to determine his identity,” he said.
