At least one person has been killed following violent clashes between rival football supporters in Cartagena after a Copa Libertadores group-stage match, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred after Atletico Junior faced Brazil’s Palmeiras in a match that ended 1–1. The fixture was staged in Cartagena due to ongoing construction work at Junior’s home stadium.
The violence involved Atletico Junior fans and supporters of local side Real Cartagena outside the stadium.
According to police, the victim — reportedly a Junior supporter — died after suffering multiple stab wounds during the confrontation. A video circulating on social media appeared to show a man attacking another who was already on the ground.
The incident is the latest in a series of violent episodes linked to football in Colombia.
Earlier this year, a similar clash in the city of Cúcuta also left one fan dead following a stabbing, highlighting ongoing concerns over fan violence in the country.
Independent investigations suggest that at least 150 supporters have been killed in football-related violence across Colombia since 2008, underlining the scale of the problem.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the latest incident, with renewed calls for improved security measures around stadiums.
