The 2026 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, with political satire ‘One Battle After Another’ topping the film categories with nine nods. The sharply observed comedy is followed by family drama ‘Sentimental Value’ with eight nominations and the Southern vampire tale ‘Sinners’ with seven.
Because the Globes separate dramas from musicals and comedies, the leading contenders will compete in different races. One Battle After Another is nominated for best motion picture, musical or comedy, alongside ‘Blue Moon’, ‘Bugonia’, ‘Marty Supreme’, ‘No Other Choice’ and ‘Nouvelle Vague’. Sentimental Value and Sinners will vie for best drama with ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Hamnet’, ‘It Was Just an Accident’ and ‘The Secret Agent’.
Television was led by ‘The White Lotus’, which earned six nominations for its third season set in a luxury Thai resort. Crime drama ‘Adolescence’, filmed as a single uninterrupted shot, followed with five. ‘Only Murders in the Building’ and ‘Severance’ received four each.
The White Lotus and Severance will compete for best drama series against ‘The Pitt’, ‘Pluribus’, ‘The Diplomat’ and ‘Slow Horses’. In comedy, Only Murders in the Building is up against ‘Abbott Elementary’, ‘The Bear’, ‘Hacks’, ‘Nobody Wants This’ and ‘The Studio’. Adolescence features in the limited series race with ‘All Her Fault’, ‘The Beast in Me’, ‘Black Mirror’, ‘Dying for Sex’ and ‘The Girlfriend’.
Netflix, still making headlines for its $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. and HBO, led all distributors with 35 nominations. Warner Bros. and HBO followed with 31.
Although the awards are famously more relaxed than the Oscars or Emmys, they arrive at a difficult moment for the industry, with streaming growth slowing, studios cutting costs and cinemas struggling. In an attempt to stay relevant, the Globes have expanded their categories. Podcasts will be recognised for the first time, with contenders including ‘Armchair Expert’, ‘Call Her Daddy’, ‘Good Hang With Amy Poehler’, ‘The Mel Robbins Podcast’, ‘Smartless’ and ‘Up First’.
A new award for cinematic or box office achievement has produced an eclectic list. Hits such as ‘F1’, Sinners, ‘Weapons’, ‘Wicked: For Good’ and ‘Zootopia’ appear alongside ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, which has yet to be released, and ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, which drew most of its audience on streaming. ‘Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning’, a box office disappointment, also made the cut. A separate category for best stand-up special includes Bill Maher, Ricky Gervais, Sarah Silverman, Kumail Nanjiani, Kevin Hart and Brett Goldstein.
One Battle After Another converted its strong showing into major acting nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, supporting nods for Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor, as well as recognition for Paul Thomas Anderson’s direction, screenplay and Jonny Greenwood’s score. Despite critical praise, the film struggled financially, earning more than 200 million dollars against a high production and marketing budget.
The White Lotus secured acting nominations for Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs. Creator Mike White has confirmed that the anthology will return for a fourth season, set on the French Riviera.
The nominations were announced by Marlon Wayans and Skye P. Marshall. The 2026 Golden Globe Awards will air on January 11 on CBS and stream on Paramount Plus in the UnS, with comedian Nikki Glaser returning as host.
