Rail communication between Khulna and the rest of the country was suspended after three wagons of an oil-laden train derailed in Kotchandpur upazila of Jhenaidah on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at around 6:00am near Safdarpur Railway Station.
According to railway sources, three wagons of the KIC-7 oil train, travelling from Khulna to Parbatipur, derailed shortly after reaching the Safdarpur station area.
Safdarpur Station Master Golam Rasul confirmed “The oil train heading to Parbatipur from Khulna went off the tracks at around 6:00am.”
“We have informed the rescue team,” he added.
Rasul said it was not yet possible to determine the extent of the damage. He also could not specify how long it would take to repair the railway line and restore train services.
Station Master said authorities had already removed the unaffected portion of the train, leaving only the derailed wagons at the site.
“We are working to restore rail movement as quickly as possible,” he added.
