International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday framed charges against seven individuals, including Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, over alleged crimes against humanity during the July uprising.
A three-member bench, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, formally read out the charges in court.
The tribunal scheduled the opening statements and commencement of witness testimonies for 17 February. All seven accused in the case are absconding.
Alongside Obaidul Quader, the accused are Awami League joint general secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League president Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, general secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League president Saddam Hussain, and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.
Prosecution has lodged three specific charges against the accused, alleging that they planned, ordered, incited, and led killings of protestors during the uprising.
The court proceedings mark a significant step in the investigation and prosecution of alleged human rights violations tied to the 2023 July events.
