Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited has appointed Md Obaidul Hoque as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, bringing in a central banking veteran with more than three decades of experience in regulation, supervision and SME development.
Before taking on the role, Md Obaidul Hoque served as a Member of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank PLC and was also a Member of its Executive Committee. Earlier, he worked as Principal at the NRBC Bank Training Institute.
He built most of his career at Bangladesh Bank, where he rose through the ranks to become Executive Director. In that role, he led the SME and Special Programmes Department and served as Project Director of the Second Small and Medium Sized Enterprise Development Project, known as SMEDP-2.
Over the years, he held a range of senior positions at the central bank, including General Manager, Deputy General Manager, Joint Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director. His responsibilities covered on-site banking supervision, currency management, administration, foreign exchange policy and inspection. He also served as Head of the Khulna Office of Bangladesh Bank.
Md Obaidul Hoque was born on October 23, 1963, in Bhola. He holds a Master of Commerce and a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Marketing from the University of Dhaka. He completed his Higher Secondary Certificate at Dhaka College and his Secondary School Certificate at Daulatkhan Government High School.
He earned the DAIBB banking diploma from the Institute of Bankers, Bangladesh in 1991 and later served the institute as an examiner.
Throughout his career, he has taken part in multiple international training programmes and workshops. These include training on balance sheet analysis and risk-based supervision conducted by the World Bank, as well as courses on policy evaluation and impact assessment sponsored by the European Union. The programmes were held in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and the United Kingdom.
He is also a certified Trainer of Trainers in the CMSME sector under a European Union programme.
