The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has approved the appointment of Nuzhat Anwar as the new managing director of Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC (DSE).
The approval was given on Thursday, clearing the way for her formal onboarding at the country’s premier bourse.
Nuzhat Anwar brings more than two decades of experience spanning financial markets, banking and development finance.
Before the appointment, she served at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, where she held several senior leadership roles across Africa and South Asia.
Her roles at IFC included resident representative for Liberia and Sierra Leone, senior country officer for Bangladesh with responsibility for Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, and acting cluster manager during the COVID-19 period and the subsequent transition phase.
She also worked as an IFC country officer in Botswana and Namibia, where she played a key role in establishing IFC’s presence in Gaborone and advancing a sustainable investment programme, including IFC’s first investment in Botswana.
Her professional expertise includes capital management, treasury and liquidity, transaction services, portfolio optimisation and market advocacy.
Earlier in her career, she spent 16 years with Citibank Bangladesh and Standard Chartered Bank Bangladesh in various senior management roles.
Nuzhat Anwar holds a master’s degree in commerce with a specialisation in finance from the University of Dhaka.
Commenting on the appointment, DSE Chairman Mominul Islam said the board welcomed the BSEC approval after a year-long recruitment process led by the nomination and remuneration committee.
He said the board is confident that Nuzhat Anwar’s leadership experience, exposure to global financial markets and commitment to capital market transformation will help guide DSE in the coming years.
He added that internal processes would now be completed to onboard her at the earliest.
