BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that despite potential conspiracies, no one will be able to sabotage the upcoming national election.
While addressing an election rally at Mohammadpur Union in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, Fakhrul expressed his firm belief that the electoral process will remain intact.
He noted that the citizens of the country have become politically awakened after being deprived of their voting rights in previous cycles and are now determined to protect polling centers and exercise their franchise.
Fakhrul, who is contesting the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, emphasised communal harmony, stating that people of all faiths, including the Hindu and Muslim communities, would participate in the election together.
He specifically urged Hindu voters to cast their ballots without fear and return home peacefully, offering them assurances of protection.
Reflecting on the political climate of the last 17 years, the BNP leader alleged that the nation had endured torture and oppression under what he described as a “fascist regime.”
He remarked that the public now has a fresh opportunity to determine the country’s future following that “dark period”.
During his speech, Fakhrul criticized former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stating that his party does not desire a leader who abandons numerous activists and leaders. He emphasised that the BNP adheres to the ideals of Shaheed Zia rather than those of “thieves and robbers.”
He also took a moment to apologise on behalf of his party’s activists, asking for the public’s forgiveness if any mistakes were made during the election campaign.
The rally saw an emotional moment when a supporter presented the BNP leader with a clay savings bank and an egg.
Seeking the blessings of martyrs, Fakhrul appealed to the electorate to vote for the “sheaf of paddy,” the symbol of former BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. He requested the opportunity to serve the people “for the last time” in the election scheduled for February 12.
The event was attended by a significant number of local residents alongside leaders and activists from the BNP and its associate organisations.
