State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has issued a stern warning against drug trafficking, saying that anyone involved in the drug trade will face action regardless of their social standing or political connections.
He made the remarks on Saturday after inaugurating a road in Jashore Sadar Upazila.
“No matter how influential a drug dealer is, there will be no place for them in society,” the state minister said, adding that a strict zero-tolerance stance would be maintained even in cases involving individuals close to him.
“If a drug dealer happens to be my relative or a member of my party, there will be no compromise,” he said. “For the sake of the party’s image, we will not consider how big a leader someone is. Tarique Rahman’s BNP has no involvement with wrongdoers and will not have any in the future.”
Focus on infrastructure and accountability
The state m,inister also highlighted the government’s commitment to fulfilling electoral pledges through the development of rural infrastructure, including roads, bridges and culverts.
He urged local residents to monitor the quality of development work, saying accountability must be ensured at all levels. “You must ensure you receive proper work from the contractors,” he said. “Whether the contractor is my relative or a party member is not your concern; your job is to demand the correct standard of work.”
He also cautioned against seeking any “unjust or unethical benefits” from contractors that could compromise project quality.
After the road inauguration, the state minister took part in a tree-planting programme along the roadside and later visited Haibatpur Union to inspect the ongoing re-excavation work of the Siris Canal.
The event was attended by senior officials and local leaders, including District Council Administrator Delwar Hossain Khokon, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan, and LGED Jashore Executive Engineer Mahbubur Rahman. Local BNP leaders, including former District BNP Vice-President Golam Reza Dulu and Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Anjurul Haque Khokon, were also present.
