Newcastle United will ask referees’ body PGMOL for clarification after Anthony Gordon was denied a penalty during Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Chelsea, manager Eddie Howe has said.
The incident occurred with Newcastle leading 2-1 at St James’ Park, when Gordon went down in the penalty area following a challenge from Trevoh Chalobah. Chelsea went on to equalise shortly afterwards through João Pedro to earn a point.
Speaking on Tuesday, Howe confirmed that the club had already contacted PGMOL to understand the reasoning behind the decision.
“We will be seeking clarification and those calls have already gone in, not from me personally but from the club,” Howe told reporters. “We just want to know the thought process behind the decisions.”
Howe reiterated his belief that Newcastle should have been awarded a penalty, describing it as “stonewall”.
“I wouldn’t want to coach defenders to make that kind of challenge in the box because you give the referees a decision to make,” he said. “One of the arts of defending is not putting yourself in that position. I thought it was a clear penalty and, having reviewed it, I haven’t changed my mind.”
