Rachel Cusk’s upcoming novel Life of M has sparked speculation that its central character draws inspiration from Oscar-winning actor Natalie Portman, reports the Hollywood Reporter.
In an article published on 17 July, writer Valerie Stivers claimed that literary circles in New York believe the novel reflects Cusk’s relationship with Portman.
The report also suggested the actor felt dissatisfied with how the fictional portrayal evolved.
Set for release on 25 August 2026, Life of M follows a globally famous actor known only as “M” and a writer commissioned to document her life.
The story unfolds against luxurious backdrops, including beaches, olive groves and chauffeured limousines, while exploring fame, identity and the distance between public image and private reality.
According to the synopsis published by Macmillan Publishers, M has lived in the public eye since childhood, enjoying a level of fame that appears to reshape the world around her.
The novel follows a writer who closely observes the actor in an attempt to understand who she truly is beneath her carefully constructed image.
Stivers argued that the fictional character closely resembles Portman, citing similarities in key biographical details.
She also claimed the novel depicts the actor’s disappointment with the finished manuscript, adding that the portrayal reflects real-life events, according to conversations within literary circles.
Portman has previously praised Cusk’s work.
In a 2021 interview with Elle, she recommended Cusk’s acclaimed Outline trilogy, saying the books demonstrated how a protagonist could be understood through the people around them.
The Hollywood Reporter said it had contacted Portman’s representatives for comment, but no response had been reported.
