A doctor in Netrokona’s Madan upazila has filed a general diary (GD) at Madan Police Station seeking protection for herself and her family after receiving death threats over a medical report confirming an 11-year-old girl’s pregnancy.
Police and hospital sources said the incident has triggered widespread concern in the area.
Doctor Saima Akter said she first examined the child on 18 April and confirmed a 27-week pregnancy through medical tests.
She later gave a media interview on 3 May, after which she began receiving threats of gang rape and murder from unknown mobile numbers and Facebook accounts. She has now filed the GD seeking protection.
Earlier on Thursday, a court granted a three-day remand for accused teacher Aman Ullah Sagar in the case.
Police said Rapid Action Battalion-14 arrested Aman Ullah Sagar from the Gouripur area on Wednesday at around 4:00am. He was produced before the Netrokona court on Thursday.
Police sought a seven-day remand, but the court granted three days. Madan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tariqul Islam confirmed that the accused is now in police custody for interrogation.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Akhtaruzzaman of Madan Police Station said the case began after the child’s family filed a complaint. Medical tests at the district hospital later confirmed the pregnancy. He added that both the child and her mother identified the madrasa teacher as being involved in the incident.
Madan Police Station OC Mohammad Tariqul Islam said the GD has been taken seriously and necessary steps are underway to ensure the doctor’s security.
