Fans of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ have reason to celebrate as Netflix and Sony officially announced a sequel to the animated musical adventure. The follow-up is set for release in 2029, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to write and direct under a new multi-year deal with Netflix focused on animation.
Kang expressed her excitement for the continuation of the story, saying, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There is so much more to this world we have built and I am excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
The original film followed a fictional K-pop girl group who defend the world from demons through their music. While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, Appelhans hinted that the filmmakers are eager to explore new challenges for their characters and watch them evolve. “These characters are like family to us. Their world has become our second home,” he said.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently nominated at the Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.” The film debuted on Netflix through a licensing deal with Sony Pictures Animation and quickly became the streamer’s most popular movie of all time. A sing-along version also found success in theatres during fan events in the fall of 2025.
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria praised the filmmakers for building a global fandom while Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin applauded the film for narrating a story that broke cultural barriers, making KPop Demon Hunters the most popular Netflix movie of all time.
Sony Pictures Animation presidents Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville also praised the film for championing the bold creative visions of the filmmakers.
