Nepal authorities on Sunday cautioned rescue teams about increasing flood levels as operations to recover victims from last week’s glacial disaster entered a fifth day.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued a warning at 7:20am (0135 GMT), AFP reports.
It said, “We have received information that the flood flow in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa has increased further. Therefore, all personnel engaged in search, rescue, and relief operations, those in riverside areas, and everyone else in affected areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan are requested to exercise caution.”
The US Geological Survey confirmed that the disaster, which struck Wednesday morning along the China–Nepal border, was triggered by a glacial collapse that sent a torrent of water and debris downstream.
Official figures from Nepal and China put the number of missing at nearly 3,000, with 691 bodies recovered so far.
