The body of a 12-year-old schoolgirl named Shammi Akhtar was recovered in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha, two days after she went missing.
Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahfuz Alam confirmed the matter on Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the morning, locals spotted the body floating in the water of a nearby waterbody (beel) close to her house. Upon being informed by the residents, police arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
Shammi was the daughter of Shahidur Rahman of Puntair (Nama Charpara) village in Mahimaganj union under Gobindaganj upazila. She was a fifth-grade student at Puntair Government Primary School.
According to local sources, Shammi went to a field near her home to graze goats alongside other children at around 11am on Sunday.
Although the other children returned home by the afternoon, she did not return. Her family members subsequently searched for her in various places.
Failing to trace her by 8pm, Shammi’s father filed a General Diary (GD) with Gobindaganj Police Station that same night.
Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahfuz Alam said the body was recovered and sent to the morgue at Gaibandha General Hospital. He added that police are working in the field to uncover the exact information.
