The death toll from devastating floods along Nepal’s border with Tibet has climbed past 1,000, the country’s disaster agency said Tuesday.
More than 3,900 people remain unaccounted for, including over 600 workers feared trapped inside a vast network of mud‑filled tunnels at hydropower sites along the Trishuli River, reports BBC.
Rescue teams have been pumping air into the tunnels. A team managed to enter one tunnel but withdrew after finding no one inside.
“I wish we could find him. I wish he would come home,” said Anushila Bhandari, whose husband Aurus, a 33‑year‑old engineer, is missing at a project site, speaking to BBC Nepali.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah said Monday that 279 people had been rescued from the hydropower sites.
The rescue operation is being led by Chinese and Nepalese military personnel, with experts from India, Korea and Australia also taking part.
