The reconstituted National Civil Aviation Security Committee (NCASC) has stressed the need for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards and installation of anti-drone systems to strengthen the country’s civil aviation security.
The reconstituted committee’s first meeting was held at Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) headquarters in Dhaka on Thursday, with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam as chair and State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat as co-chair, said a press release.
Afroza Khanam said decisions from the committee’s previous 13th meeting must be implemented quickly as the country faced an upcoming ICAO audit.
“The country’s image is tied to ICAO’s observations. Measures must be taken to ensure compliance with issues they may flag,” she said.
Security protocols were equal for all, including VIPs and CIPs, she said, calling on all to ensure improved passenger services for expatriate Bangladeshis.
Rashiduzzaman Millat said an anti-drone system would be installed to prevent drone flights in airport areas and that security equipment and scanners should exceed required numbers.
He directed law enforcement agencies to take a firm stance against any legal violations.
The meeting discussed strengthening intelligence sharing and coordination among agencies, implementing the national civil aviation security programme, following ICAO safety standards, installing modern security technology and reviewing existing policies, said the press release.
Speakers also emphasised strengthening security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport entrances, reviewing the effectiveness of under-vehicle scanning systems and signing memoranda of understanding with relevant ministries and agencies for effective contingency and crisis management.
Authorities discussed controlling traffic congestion, unauthorised gatherings, beggar nuisance and illegal luggage wrapping in the airport’s landside area, recommending legal action where necessary.
