A local leader of the NCP has been temporarily suspended from the organisation after a video went viral showing him being beaten with shoes by women for allegedly sending lewd messages.
Ali Azam Sabbir, a member of the NCP Shibganj Upazila coordination team, was enrolled as a trainee at the Bogura Technical Training Centre (TTC) driving course. Local sources said several female trainees had grown frustrated by persistent harassment and obscene messages sent via mobile phone.
On 24 May, the situation escalated when a group of female trainees cornered Sabbir in a room and assaulted him with footwear. The footage quickly spread on social media.
Rashedul Hasan, a driving instructor at the TTC, confirmed Sabbir’s indecent behaviour toward the trainees. “Sabbir has admitted his guilt and provided a written undertaking,” he said, noting that the Academy Council would decide further disciplinary action once the office reopened.
Following public outcry, the NCP Bogura district branch took swift action on Friday night. Shawkat Imran, the district unit’s organising secretary, issued a formal letter suspending Sabbir from all party duties.
“Upon noticing the allegations, Sabbir was immediately relieved of his responsibilities,” Imran said. The party has also issued a show-cause notice, giving Sabbir three days to explain why he should not be permanently expelled.
During the initial confrontation, Sabbir reportedly apologised for his conduct. Investigations into his behaviour by both the political party and the training centre are ongoing.
