The National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced a 10-day programme to mark its first founding anniversary. The programs will run from 28 February to 14 March under the slogan, “The country will move on a new path, fascism will never return.”
Ariful Islam Adib, senior joint convener of the party, shared this information on Thursday evening at NCP’s temporary office in Banglamotor. He stated that a central Iftar gathering will be held on 28 February at 4pm at the Abahani Field in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
Members of families martyred during the July mass uprising, leaders of anti-fascist political parties, journalists, teachers, and workers have been invited to the event. There will also be a documentary and photo exhibition showcasing the programs of the past year.
Adib said, “During the mass uprising, we saw all political parties, students, workers, the public, and people from all professions participating together. Therefore, on this first anniversary, we are going to celebrate our founding day with the members of those martyr families who made the ultimate sacrifice, gave their lives, for the aspiration of the mass uprising – the reconstruction of a new Bangladesh, the establishment of a Bangladesh of justice and human dignity.”
He also criticised the government’s recent activities. Expressing concern over several incidents since the BNP government was formed on 17 February, Adib stated, “The process by which the governor of Bangladesh Bank was appointed is an unprecedented event in Bangladesh’s history. And we have seen that among the officials of Bangladesh Bank, those who are pro-Awami League are now agitating against this governor – something that has never happened before.”
Party Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar warned the government regarding constitutional reform, saying, “If the government does not take any initiative to form the Constitution Reform Council in the parliamentary session scheduled for the 12th, this will definitely lead Bangladesh towards instability. And in that case, the government will have to take full responsibility.”
Tushar further stated, “NCP has shown the most commitment to democracy and reform. NCP will play its role both inside and outside parliament.”
Following the central event, Iftar gatherings will be held successively in various divisions across the country. The program will start from Chittagong on 2 March and then proceed through Cumilla, Sylhet, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Barishal, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Rangpur, concluding in Dhaka Metropolitan South on 14 March. The party has stated that each divisional event will feature similar arrangements involving local martyr families, dignitaries, and party leaders.
